I'm confused. Is this a an Ad for DeBeers? Or is it a human rights group protesting the violence and genocide that comes from the power struggle that is African Conflict Diamonds?

singleguy: this is a spoof-ad I made "protesting the violence and genocide that comes from the power struggle that is African Conflict Diamonds".

google adbusters and culture-jamming if you're interested in similar things others have done with brands.

Really cool image. Powerful imagery. Im looking forward to the movie Blood Diamond it looks really good and Leonardo DiCaprio is playing a South African so wanna hear his attempt at the accent.

i saw the trailer for it and the accent was dreadful. he kept going in and out of it and i think he thought he was british or austrailian half the time.

he was good in what's eating gilbert grape and the departed.

disturbing but good spoof-ad!

vile and grim and mood spoiling.........if u attempted to shock or stun...didnt work.....

anonymous:the intent behind the conception and execution did not fall within any of the parameters you've outlined.

Oh. this is powerful stuff. I never knew about Blood Diamonds before.

South Africa is one of the few places you can buy a special type of diamond used in weapons production, the other places are in Soviet Union. Therefore apartheid wasn't a problem during the cold war as long as the rulers kept supplying the west with these diamonds.

shocking stuff. nicely done.
sad to know that we as South Africans are, in a way, part of this problem.
and not only this, but as middle to upper class citizens, happy to sit on our hands while poverty and death whips a clean path of destruction right across the country...

wow. impressive. and scary.

so, um...could you point me to the "bondage stuff" muhammad mentioned, hmmm?

know what would be cool? walking into a store and insisting on a blood diamond. yes. i've just inspired me - i will do that this weekend!

but seriously, awesome work.

Hmmm...Saaleha...I didn't give that any head when i was putting this together. I may need to get down to reading some of Justin Nurse's stuff to see what kind of recourse I have.

This is good stuff Saaleha.
Reminds me of Kanye Wests song "Diamonds are Forever".
Freaky video.

But this is more hard-hitting and gets to the point.

Can't wait for the movie to come out.

Some of your posts have a (1) in the title, what does that represent?

Saaleha Idrees Bamjee said...

ahmed: I haven't migrated to Blogger Beta yet, as such I have none of the functionality tags would usually offer. Therefore, if i intend to create a future post with a related theme or within the same category, i would insert a ...(1) or ...(2) into the title dependant on where the post falls in the series.
If you search this blog for "The Ties That Bind" you'll see this in practice.

happy day:)

Just discovered this website which has set up an extensive Internet and Print Campaign against DeBeers Diamonds. It's worth a look:

Howzit guys. Hectic pic. Just to update you, but God Forbid I sound like a lappy but here goes.

Working in Diamond industry, so i'm biased. But the Bushmen won the case to stay, and the government eviction was stopped. It’s a whole new topic, but focusing it for this comment.

The country is really split on the decision. Because of the perceived wealth that may be there (BTW no1 has proven diamonds are there, it’s actually a huge gas field that can be used to generate power). Let’s face it Botswana runs on diamonds and trust me there are doing all right there. It’s an awesome place. They use it to uplift their people. The Botswana government sends most of their matric equivalent graduates over sea’s to study further. I'm not going to be naive and think its all good, but if the people themselves work it out, Diamonds can be a powerful tool for upliftment. Diamonds don’t fuel conflict, people fuel conflict.

Personally I don’t value diamonds but EVERY girl I met does. From a technical point of view diamonds used for industry can be manufactured at a fraction of the cost. So we mine for diamond rings. Please don’t bite my head off I’m not being chauvinistic, just my experience.

So I think targeting debeers and diamonds may stop the guns but it wont stop the killing. Evil people kill target them. I don’t know much about the movie but lets wait and c
